This short poem was written by a gentleman who is proud to be the father of a Special Olympian. It tells of just one of the factors that make these young people so Special.

The athletes had come from all over the country
To run for the gold, the silver and bronze
Many weeks and months of training
All coming down to these games.

The spectators gathered around the old field
To cheer on all the young women and men
The final event of the day was approaching
Excitement grew high to begin.

The blocks were all lined up for those who would use them
The hundred-yard dash was the race to be run
There were nine resolved athletes in back of the starting line
Poised for the sound of the gun.

The signal was given, the pistol exploded
And so did the runners all charging ahead
But the smallest among them, he stumbled and staggered
And fell to the asphalt instead.

He gave out a cry in frustration and anguish
His dreams and his efforts all dashed in the dirt
But as sure as I'm standing here telling this story
The same goes for what next occurred.

The eight other runners pulled up on their heels
The ones who had trained for so long to compete
One by one they all turned around and went back to help him
And brought the young boy to his feet.

Then all the nine runners joined hands and continued
The hundred-yard dash now reduced to a walk
And a banner above that said "Special Olympics"
Could not have been more on the mark.

That's how the race ended, with nine gold medals
They came to the finish line holding hands still
And a standing ovation and nine beaming faces
Said more than these words ever will.

This poem combines Father's Day and the "Special Olympics" I have so enjoyed over the past few days.

The song you are listening to is "You'll Never Walk Alone." Isn't it amazing how children are willing to share with other children? Pretty "Special" if you ask me.

Most of you already know Angelfairy Internet is dedicated to helping the needy children right here in the United States, but I think I'll pass on some facts even I found surprising and maybe it will help you to understand even easier. Our last census came forward with these numbers, and even though it seems like more to me, I have no doubt but to trust them. It seems that 2/3 of the children out there are not eating as they should. We will use the number 9 as an example since it is easily divided by 3. Out of those 9 only 3 eat breakfast and dinner with their families, assuring them of a full and nutritious meal. The next 3 are a part of what is known as the "latch-key generation". Because of the necessity of work they rarely, if ever, see their parents. They eat when they are hungry, catch as catch can. It's a good thing that today you can get full meals in the form that needs only to be microwaved; if they are kept in your cupboard and easy for the child to find he is more likely to eat that than the "fast food" or pizza that is often the norm. I know that it isn't the perfect solution, but it is often better than 'catch as catch can'. The final group are the 3 children we here at Angelfairy Internet care about. For some reason or other, it never seems to be the child's fault even though they are the ones to suffer, the adults in their lives are unable to provide them with food. There are quite a few food sites in this area, but they run into many problems. Most have had trouble with children acting up, acting like children, so they have banned them. Places like this only have a certain amount of room so they can only make enough food for the patrons. If there is some left over then the adults are allowed to take home a plate to the children, if not, well that is the way it goes. I have seen adults put things like buttered rolls, bread, even some of the food from their plate, in a pocket so that they can take it home to others. Just imagine having to eat meatloaf that has been in someone's linty pocket. But then I suppose that's more appetizing than eating what you can forage from some trash can, and I've seen that all too often. Whenever I see a child doing that I just have to take them home with me and share my meal. Right now they have me on "Meals on Wheels" and that just isn't enough to share, so I'll give them the whole thing and have myself some chunky type soup that's more like stew than soup. I'd like to have some of those full Microwave meals on hand for the children who need them, but affording them is out of the question right now. At this point my SSI is just barely covering what I need for myself.
