AN ANGEL IN YOUR POCKET

I am a tiny angel...

I'm smaller than your thumb;

I live in people's pockets,

That's where I have my fun.

I don't suppose you've seen me,

I'm too tiny to detect;

Though I'm with you all the time,

I doubt we've ever met.

Before I was an Angel...

I was a fairy in a flower;

God, Himself, hand-picked me,

And gave me Angel power.

Now God has many Angels

That He trains in Angel pools;

We become His eyes, and ears, and hands...

We become His special tools.

And because God is so busy,

With way too much to do;

He said that my assignment

Is to keep close watch on you.

When he tucked me in your pocket,

He blessed you with Angel care;

Then told me never to leave you,

And I vowed always to be there.

THE BUTTERFLY

One summer day a young girl was taking a walk through her neighborhood park. She was mesmerized by the beauty. Green, fresh-cut grass, a potpourri of flowers in every shape and color bordering the paths and trees. The sweet succulent smell of cherry blossoms emanated from the trees.

The child felt inclined to pick a cherry blossom for her mommy because they were the prettiest flowers with the most fragrant scent. She approached the tree and was investigating the branches, searching for the biggest blossom, when she first spotted the caterpillar. The young girl froze in shock. She stared in amazement at how the caterpillar laid there so lifeless. A thick, brownish crust was starting to form around the bottom of the caterpillar. The girl thought of all the people who walk by the tree and all the people who do maintenance on the tree. She wondered, how could people just let the caterpillar die there? Doesn't this caterpillar deserve a proper burial instead of being left there to rot?

The distraught girl trudged home crying. She decided to talk to her mom about burying the deceased caterpillar. When she arrived home, she told her mother about her discovery at the park. The child asked about giving the caterpillar a funereal. The young girl's mother, in her most loving voice, told her daughter that she did not want her picking up the caterpillar. The mother told her wide-eyed little girl not to worry so much about the insect. Nature has a way of taking carte of itself, her mother told her. That night, when the young girl went to sleep, she dreamed of having a special funereal for the lifeless green caterpillar.

A couple of weeks passed and curiosity got the best of the little girl. She decided to take a trip to her neighborhood park. Disregarding the green fresh-cut grass and potpourri of flowers of every shape and color, the child proceeded to the cherry tree where she had discovered the caterpillar weeks ago. She searched the branch once again and could not believe her eyes. The caterpillar was enveloped in a thick brownish crust, and one could not see the lifeless green caterpillar underneath. The girl reached to pick up the crusty mass that was once a caterpillar. She was going to take it home for a funereal when she remembered the promise to her mother not to touch the insect. Feeling hopeless and mournful, the girl retreated to her home.

As time passed, not a night went by that the girl didn't dream of burying what was left of the caterpillar. The child decided despite what people said, she was going to give the caterpillar a funereal. The young girl took a small cardboard box, colored it with crayons, and lined it with pretty gold tissue paper. As she headed out the door, she told her parents she was going for a walk in the park and would be back shortly. As the child arrived at the park, she chose a special place among the flowers where the caterpillar should be laid to rest. She picked a cherry blossom and placed it gingerly in the box. She walked cautiously over to the tree that held the caterpillar on its branch. When she looked at the branch, she couldn't believe her eyes. Emerging from the ugly, brownish crust was the most beautiful butterfly she had ever seen. The child watched in amazement as the butterfly released itself from its cocoon and flew off into the deep blue sky. Not sure whether her eyes were playing tricks on her, she inspected the cocoon, only to find it empty. She felt so much happiness that tears were beginning to form.

The young girl sat on a patch of grass under the cherry tree to reflect on the knowledge she had gained. She realized that when one door closes another one opens. She also concluded that what can seem like the end, is only the beginning of a beautiful new adventure. The young girl rose to her feet and started the journey home. She could not wait to tell her parents the secrets of life she had discovered.
