Our Trip to the Mountains

A reflection of the Lord

The wonders that God has given us never stops amazing me. Last Sept I took a day off to spend with my kids in the mountains of Leadville Colorado. It was a trip they (and I) will remember for years to come. The Aspen trees were in full color.

Not only was it relaxing and refreshing, but I could reflect on Gods wonderful creation.

As I look at Turquoise Lake from the van window I could only imagine what it looked like in the 1800's. Man made lakes and stream often protect the beauty of the land. God's resources are being protected through lakes and reserves like this. This is beauty in it's self.

A short 50 yard hike from the Boustead tunnel, A tunnel made to bring the water from the West slope of the Continental divide to the East side to be used for drinking water and irrigation all the way to the Missouri Valley, gives us a view of a small cascade coming down the mountain.

It reminded me of the "River of Life" from Revelation. Then I had to remember this is muddy and contaminated compared to his beauty

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

As we began the climb up the "Haggerman Pass" (and old railroad bed that goes above the timber line over to the west slopes) we could see all the way down the valley past Ten Mile Tunnel. Ten Mile Tunnel is still under construction and is the longest water transfer tunnel in the US. It will bring water from the West Slope to the East Slope of the US.

When we reached one of the hairpin turns we could see all the way up the Turquoise Valley, A testimony of Gods Magnificence.

About half way up the pass is the "Haggerman Tunnel", finished in 1948. It was the first water transport tunnel on the Continental Divide. Though it is only 2 mile long; in 1945 it was a tremendous under taking.

Just 100 feet from the entrance is a grave of George Mass, a miners killed during the construction of the tunnel. Someone is still keeping the grave beautiful.

The road is getting a bit rougher now; but that is the way the walk with God is too, the closer you get to God the harder the road is to travel.

We stopped a little way ahead at the "Colorado Midland Monument" 1883-1921. This is a picture well worth seeing. Though things on this earth come and go, the Lords love and promises last forever.

The road gets even rougher after the railroad stop. Heather is starting to cry, because Jacob is saying "We're going to fall off the mountain and die". Ryan is not helping much by rocking the van back and forth. Fear is contagious as many of us had seen in our lives.

When we trust in the Lord there is nothing to fear. Trying to be a good example I am pointing out the window saying "WOW ; take a look at that view will you?" Mind you we are going up a 10% grade on this narrow bumpy path in a 21 foot 13 passenger van, What peril lye ahead? Some of us have been down perilous roads in our lives, so we are prepared. But when we travel into the unknown we have to learn to trust in God; not always an easy task to do.

After a long and treacherous trip we arrived at the top of the world to find the Gate locked due to terrorism. With this I will end today with one last comment. If you got to the Pearly Gates and they we locked. If St Peter said "Why SHOULD I let you in?", What would you say?
